The Secretary of State for Transport Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP has welcomed the first passengers on a flight from China in the first of an extended series of flights, which, if developed into a daily service, could deliver an additional £81 million to the UK economy each year, including £62 million per year for the West Midlands. The Boeing 767-300 aircraft, operated by Hainan Airlines, arrived this morning with 233 passengers visiting the UK on organised package tours. This is the first in a series of flights that will see more than 4,000 Chinese visitors to the region over the summer months through packages offered by Caissa Touristic, one of China’s largest tour operators. Hainan inaugural From left to right: Jenny Loynton, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for the West Midlands, Mayor of Solihull’s Consort, Mr Clive Slater, The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Glenis Slater, Chief Executive Birmingham Airport Paul Kehoe, Hu Hui, Caissa Touristic, Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Ray Hassell and Fei Yang of Hainan Airlines. Secretary of State for Transport Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP said: “Airports play a vital role in our long-term economic plan so this route between Birmingham and China is a great step forward. “The new service will showcase the West Midlands to thousands of visitors and potential investors. “Birmingham Airport’s work towards a daily service shows their commitment to creating opportunities and new jobs in the region.” Paul Kehoe, CEO of Birmingham Airport, has joined business leaders in hailing the flights as a sign of continued growth in the region: “Last year’s test of direct Beijing flights were the result of collaborative working with Birmingham City Council, Marketing Birmingham, VisitBritain and the Government. I am delighted that we have been able to push on from last year’s success to offer a series of 34 flights this summer. “The Midlands is a powerful engine of growth at the heart of our country and needs direct aviation to succeed. As the only region to have a positive balance of trade with China, we know how much the Midlands tourism and manufacturing industries value this direct connection. “All involved in the deal intend that these Hainan flights will build over the coming years, before becoming the first scheduled service between a non-London UK airport and mainland China.” A daily scheduled route would offer significant potential economic benefits to the West Midlands. In a forthcoming report being undertaken by York Aviation, the transport analysts say that “such a flight could support additional Gross Value Added in the region of around £62 million a year and around 1350 jobs”. In addition, York Aviation say that the time savings for passengers in the West Midlands, able to fly from Birmingham to China rather than via Heathrow, would be worth £5 million a year to the economy. Businesses across the region have been quick to welcome this development. 3rd July 2015

Beijing (formerly romanised as Peking) is the capital of the People's Republic of China and the world's third most populous city proper. It is also one of the world's most populous capital cities. The city, located in northern China, is governed as a direct-controlled municipality under the national government with 16 urban, suburban, and rural districts. Beijing Municipality is surrounded by Hebei Province with the exception of neighbouring Tianjin Municipality to the southeast; together the three divisions form the Jingjinji metropolitan region and the national capital region of China. A city combining both modern and traditional architecture, Beijing is an ever-changing megacity rich in history but also truly modern, exemplified in its extraordinary global influence in politics, business & economy, education, history, culture, language, music, sporting, architecture, civilization, fashion, art, entertainment, innovation and technology. Beijing is the second largest Chinese city by urban population after Shanghai and is the nation's political, cultural, and educational centre. It is home to the headquarters of most of China's largest state-owned companies, and is a major hub for the national highway, expressway, railway, and high-speed rail networks. The Beijing Capital International Airport has been the second busiest in the world by passenger traffic since 2010, and, as of 2016, the city's subway network is the busiest and second longest in the world, after Shanghai's subway system. The city's history dates back three millennia. As the last of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, Beijing has been the political centre of the country for much of the past eight centuries. With mountains surrounding the inland city on three sides, in addition to the old inner and outer city walls, Beijing was strategically poised and developed to be the residence of the emperor and thus was the perfect location for the imperial capital. Beijing was the largest city in the world by population for much of the second millennium A.D. The city is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, parks, gardens, tombs, walls and gates, and its art treasures and universities have made it a centre of culture and art in China. Encyclopædia Britannica notes that "few cities in the world have served for so long as the political headquarters and cultural centre of an area as immense as China." Beijing has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Zhoukoudian, as well as parts of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal, all popular locations for tourism. siheyuans, the city's traditional housing style, and hutongs, the narrow alleys between siheyuans, are common in urban Beijing and are also major tourist attractions. The city hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and was chosen to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, which will make it the first city to ever host both events. Many of Beijing's 91 universities consistently rank among the best in China, of which Peking University and Tsinghua University are ranked in the top 60 universities in the world. In 2015, 52 companies of the Fortune Global 500 company headquarters were located in Beijing, more than any other city in the world, including state-owned enterprises State Grid, China National Petroleum, and Sinopec Group, ranked 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively. Beijing CBD is quickly becoming the center for Beijing's economic expansion, rapid modernization, and radically changing skyline, with the ongoing or recently completed construction of multiple skyscrapers. Beijing's Zhongguancun area is also known as China's Silicon Valley, China's center of innovation and technology entrepreneurship. According to the 2016 InterNations Expat Insider Survey, Beijing ranked first in Asia in the subcategory "Personal Finance Index," a measure of expats' salaries versus cost of living in the city. Expats live primarily in the east, in urban districts such as Dongcheng and Chaoyang, or in suburban districts such as Shunyi. Let's take a proper look at Beijing, the Capital city of China... The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s 21 founding members officially recognized the bank in October 2014, and have raised US$50 billion so far in capital. The AIIB’s existing funds are dwarfed by those held in established banks such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank. In fact, the AIIB’s current size is one-third that of the Asian Development Bank’s and has one-fifth the cash the IMF can draw on immediately. The new institution is seen as China’s answer to the other Western-dominated banks whose largest shareholders are predominantly the United States, European Union countries and Japan. In comparison, the AIIB’s main shareholders so far are China, India, Qatar and Kuwait. According to the Asian Development Bank, Asia’s infrastructure investment needs could reach US$750 billion in the next decade, an amount the Asian Development Bank can’t finance on its own. The AIIB could close the current gap between supply and demand. The AIIB’s supporters say funds will also go toward building cross-border infrastructure that will better bind the region together. American officials believe China is using the bank to increase its soft power in Asia and have pressured U.S. allies to stay out of the AIIB. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. A major milestone in the drive to create a Northern Powerhouse, as the first ever direct, scheduled flight from anywhere outside of London to mainland China launches, from Manchester Airport. Also hailed as a significant moment for UK aviation, the Hainan Airlines service to Beijing takes off from Manchester Airport today (June 10). The four times a week route will link Manchester and Beijing, opening up a wealth of trade and tourism opportunities. The flights will provide a direct connection for the first time, giving the 100,000 passengers travelling each year between the two cities the convenience of direct scheduled services. The Manchester-Beijing route is worth at least £250 million in economic benefits to the UK over the next decade. Two-thirds of this will be felt directly in the Northern economy in terms of increased jobs, economic activity and tourism. By providing a non-stop service, the new route will also generate journey time savings worth £5 million every year for business passengers and avoid the inconvenience of changing planes at another airport. See the Manchester Airport press release: http://bit.ly/1U4Erx0 Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: “The new route between Manchester and Beijing is a testament to the strength of the Northern Powerhouse, opening up the North of England to investment while benefitting the many thousands of people who currently travel between the cities each year. “Not only will this add an estimated quarter of a billion pounds to the local economy over the next decade, it will open new opportunities for businesses in both countries, boost tourism between China and the UK and will encourage students in both countries to experience studying in a new and different culture. This is an exciting new development for Manchester, the North of England and the UK.” Watch this video by the GCS Local Campaigns Team (North).

The Tibet train is the world`s highest railroad. The tracks consist of 960 km`s built across land 4,000 m above sea level, with the highest point reaching 5,072m. Riding a Tibet train to Lhasa has become a rather good choice of traveling to Tibet with the completion of the world's highest railway, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Taking a train to Tibet is even the top choice for many foreign tourists to Tibet for a Tibet train tour is really so impressive both because of the breathtaking scenery along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and the railway itself. Of course, enjoying the high-quality services on the best train in China is also a wonderful experience of traveling to Tibet by train. Besides, it is also relatively convenient to take a train to Lhasa from other inland cities of China. At present, there are direct trains to Tibet from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing and Xining. Many trains to Tibet beginning from other cities will pass by Xining, Xian, Lanzhou or Golmud. Therefore, not surprisingly, Qinghai-Tibet Railway is so attractive for both domestic and foreign tourists to Tibet. The train to Lhasa from Beijing is equipped with advanced facilities that are tailor-made according to the special elevation, temperature and other specific situations along the world's highest railway, Qinghai-Tibet Railway, such as air-conditioning, supercharging system, oxygen supply, altitude display, etc. Moreover, the totally-closed train is installed with sightseeing windows covered by anti-ultraviolet film so as to protect passengers from ultraviolet radiation. To be honest, a Beijing-Lhasa train tour is really worth a shot for the unique and wonderful scenery along the Qinghai-Tibet railway alone.

The megalopolis, called Jing-Jin-Ji, would link Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, will be spread over 82,000 square miles, about six times the size of New York City, but with a population of as much as one third of the United States. The plan aims to revamp northern China’s economy, by moving parts of Beijing’s bureaucracy, factories and hospitals to the hinterland, while offering new services that are lacking in areas around Beijing such as bus terminals, schools, cinemas and parks. A subway and better light rail system are also under construction and will open in the next three to five years. A new bridge over the Chaobai River will connect to Beijing. With this new super city, the Chinese government aims to assign new economic rules to the cities: Beijing will focus on culture and technology, Tianjin will become a research base for manufacturing and Hebei will more likely focus on minor industries, such as textiles. The entire project, which has the support of President Xi Jinping, is likely to see a deep reconsideration of how taxes are collected and distributed within the territory, which would mean instituting property taxes and allowing local governments to keep them. “This is a huge project and is more complicated than roads and rail,” Wang Hu, a historian of Beijing’s development was quoted by the New York Times as saying. “But if it can succeed, it will change the face of northern China.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health.
