The Secretary of State for Transport Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP has welcomed the first passengers on a flight from China in the first of an extended series of flights, which, if developed into a daily service, could deliver an additional £81 million to the UK economy each year, including £62 million per year for the West Midlands. The Boeing 767-300 aircraft, operated by Hainan Airlines, arrived this morning with 233 passengers visiting the UK on organised package tours. This is the first in a series of flights that will see more than 4,000 Chinese visitors to the region over the summer months through packages offered by Caissa Touristic, one of China’s largest tour operators. Hainan inaugural From left to right: Jenny Loynton, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for the West Midlands, Mayor of Solihull’s Consort, Mr Clive Slater, The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Glenis Slater, Chief Executive Birmingham Airport Paul Kehoe, Hu Hui, Caissa Touristic, Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Ray Hassell and Fei Yang of Hainan Airlines. Secretary of State for Transport Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP said: “Airports play a vital role in our long-term economic plan so this route between Birmingham and China is a great step forward. “The new service will showcase the West Midlands to thousands of visitors and potential investors. “Birmingham Airport’s work towards a daily service shows their commitment to creating opportunities and new jobs in the region.” Paul Kehoe, CEO of Birmingham Airport, has joined business leaders in hailing the flights as a sign of continued growth in the region: “Last year’s test of direct Beijing flights were the result of collaborative working with Birmingham City Council, Marketing Birmingham, VisitBritain and the Government. I am delighted that we have been able to push on from last year’s success to offer a series of 34 flights this summer. “The Midlands is a powerful engine of growth at the heart of our country and needs direct aviation to succeed. As the only region to have a positive balance of trade with China, we know how much the Midlands tourism and manufacturing industries value this direct connection. “All involved in the deal intend that these Hainan flights will build over the coming years, before becoming the first scheduled service between a non-London UK airport and mainland China.” A daily scheduled route would offer significant potential economic benefits to the West Midlands. In a forthcoming report being undertaken by York Aviation, the transport analysts say that “such a flight could support additional Gross Value Added in the region of around £62 million a year and around 1350 jobs”. In addition, York Aviation say that the time savings for passengers in the West Midlands, able to fly from Birmingham to China rather than via Heathrow, would be worth £5 million a year to the economy. Businesses across the region have been quick to welcome this development. 3rd July 2015

Beijing Municipality is surrounded by Hebei Province with the exception of neighbouring Tianjin Municipality to the southeast; together the three divisions form the Jingjinji metropolitan region and the national capital region of China. A city combining both modern and traditional architecture, Beijing is an ever-changing megacity rich in history but also truly modern, exemplified in its extraordinary global influence in politics, business & economy, education, history, culture, language, music, sporting, architecture, civilization, fashion, art, entertainment, innovation and technology. Beijing is the second largest Chinese city by urban population after Shanghai and is the nation's political, cultural, and educational centre. It is home to the headquarters of most of China's largest state-owned companies, and is a major hub for the national highway, expressway, railway, and high-speed rail networks. The Beijing Capital International Airport has been the second busiest in the world by passenger traffic since 2010, and, as of 2016, the city's subway network is the busiest and second longest in the world, after Shanghai's subway system. The city's history dates back three millennia. As the last of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, Beijing has been the political centre of the country for much of the past eight centuries. With mountains surrounding the inland city on three sides, in addition to the old inner and outer city walls, Beijing was strategically poised and developed to be the residence of the emperor and thus was the perfect location for the imperial capital. Beijing was the largest city in the world by population for much of the second millennium A.D. The city is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, parks, gardens, tombs, walls and gates, and its art treasures and universities have made it a centre of culture and art in China. Encyclopædia Britannica notes that "few cities in the world have served for so long as the political headquarters and cultural centre of an area as immense as China." Beijing has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Zhoukoudian, as well as parts of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal, all popular locations for tourism. siheyuans, the city's traditional housing style, and hutongs, the narrow alleys between siheyuans, are common in urban Beijing and are also major tourist attractions. The city hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and was chosen to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, which will make it the first city to ever host both events. Many of Beijing's 91 universities consistently rank among the best in China, of which Peking University and Tsinghua University are ranked in the top 60 universities in the world. In 2015, 52 companies of the Fortune Global 500 company headquarters were located in Beijing, more than any other city in the world, including state-owned enterprises State Grid, China National Petroleum, and Sinopec Group, ranked 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively. Beijing CBD is quickly becoming the center for Beijing's economic expansion, rapid modernization, and radically changing skyline, with the ongoing or recently completed construction of multiple skyscrapers. Beijing's Zhongguancun area is also known as China's Silicon Valley, China's center of innovation and technology entrepreneurship. According to the 2016 InterNations Expat Insider Survey, Beijing ranked first in Asia in the subcategory "Personal Finance Index," a measure of expats' salaries versus cost of living in the city. Expats live primarily in the east, in urban districts such as Dongcheng and Chaoyang, or in suburban districts such as Shunyi. Let's take a proper look at Beijing, the Capital city of China... A new mega-sized airport being built in China could shift the balance of power in the country's airline industry. Beijing's new 6-pier, radial-shaped airport was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. It will cover an area of 313,000sqm. Flag carrier Air China dominates the current Beijing airport. Its regional rivals China Eastern Airlines control Shanghai, while China Southern Airlines hold Guangzhou. The new airport will allow China Eastern and China Southern a 40 percent share of passengers each, which may encourage the two provincial airlines to open lucrative new North American routes, Bloomberg reported. "There are demands to add hundreds of flights in Beijing every day that get refused because we're running out of resources," Liu Xuesong, general manager of Capital Airports Holding, the operator of Beijing's existing airport, told Bloomberg. The new airport is due to open in 2019 and will have a capacity of 100 million passengers a year. Liu told Bloomberg that the current Capital International Airport and the new airport together will handle 170 million passengers annually with their seven runways by 2025. Industry experts worry the expansion will result in heavy air traffic as only about 20 percent of China's airspace is open to civilian flights. China is known for flight delays. Its big three airlines were ranked the least punctual of the world's major carriers last year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. The megalopolis, called Jing-Jin-Ji, would link Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, will be spread over 82,000 square miles, about six times the size of New York City, but with a population of as much as one third of the United States. The plan aims to revamp northern China’s economy, by moving parts of Beijing’s bureaucracy, factories and hospitals to the hinterland, while offering new services that are lacking in areas around Beijing such as bus terminals, schools, cinemas and parks. A subway and better light rail system are also under construction and will open in the next three to five years. A new bridge over the Chaobai River will connect to Beijing. With this new super city, the Chinese government aims to assign new economic rules to the cities: Beijing will focus on culture and technology, Tianjin will become a research base for manufacturing and Hebei will more likely focus on minor industries, such as textiles. The entire project, which has the support of President Xi Jinping, is likely to see a deep reconsideration of how taxes are collected and distributed within the territory, which would mean instituting property taxes and allowing local governments to keep them. “This is a huge project and is more complicated than roads and rail,” Wang Hu, a historian of Beijing’s development was quoted by the New York Times as saying. “But if it can succeed, it will change the face of northern China.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. Dear Audience, On my 10th report on AIR CHINA, i finally got a FREE UPGRADE, from ECONOMY CLASS to PREMIUM ECONOMY CLASS on A330. Be honest, the new Premium Economy class does not have much difference with normal economy, the only highlights are 1. Priority in food selection 2. Slightly more Legroom, width is same as economy since 2x4x2 Layout. 3. More space on overhead bin, well depend on how many people were seated in your section. There is only 16 Premium Economy Seats in total on that day. But for this short-haul flight, I'm satisfied!! Many of you will ask, why do you bother to transfer at SEOUL instead of direct flight from BEIJING to VANCOUVER on AIR CANADA? Well when i'm booking, the roundtrip direct flight is asking me for roughly 5500CAD, well if i use multicity option, that is DIRECT from VANCOUVER O BEIJING, on my way back i booked SEOUL - VANCOUVER, it only cost me 3300CAD, which means i saved more than 2200CAD!! This segment of flight is booked by using my AIR CHINA mileage, plus i paid 70CAD as fuel surcharges.....The highlight at SEOUL also includes the SINGAPORE AIRLINE SILVERKRIS lounge!! I truly do not want to go AIR CHINA LOUNGE at BEIJING anymore......... Hope you guys enjoy my report:))

A major milestone in the drive to create a Northern Powerhouse, as the first ever direct, scheduled flight from anywhere outside of London to mainland China launches, from Manchester Airport. Also hailed as a significant moment for UK aviation, the Hainan Airlines service to Beijing takes off from Manchester Airport today (June 10). The four times a week route will link Manchester and Beijing, opening up a wealth of trade and tourism opportunities. The flights will provide a direct connection for the first time, giving the 100,000 passengers travelling each year between the two cities the convenience of direct scheduled services. The Manchester-Beijing route is worth at least £250 million in economic benefits to the UK over the next decade. Two-thirds of this will be felt directly in the Northern economy in terms of increased jobs, economic activity and tourism. By providing a non-stop service, the new route will also generate journey time savings worth £5 million every year for business passengers and avoid the inconvenience of changing planes at another airport. See the Manchester Airport press release: http://bit.ly/1U4Erx0 Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: “The new route between Manchester and Beijing is a testament to the strength of the Northern Powerhouse, opening up the North of England to investment while benefitting the many thousands of people who currently travel between the cities each year. “Not only will this add an estimated quarter of a billion pounds to the local economy over the next decade, it will open new opportunities for businesses in both countries, boost tourism between China and the UK and will encourage students in both countries to experience studying in a new and different culture. This is an exciting new development for Manchester, the North of England and the UK.” Watch this video by the GCS Local Campaigns Team (North).

The new carrier is being built in a shipyard in the northern city of Dalian, the same shipyard where the Liaoning, a refurbished vessel purchased from Ukraine, was retrofitted. Once complete, the new, 315 metre-long carrier will be slightly larger than the Liaoning. That vessel is able to carry up to 50 aircraft, while the new carrier will be able to carry up to 70. The 25-year-old Liaoning has burdened the People’s Liberation Army Navy with a number of maintenance issues and uses an outdated ‘ski-jump’ ramp in order to launch aircraft. The new carrier will use two electromagnetic catapults instead, like those used on many American carriers. The new aircraft carrier may include four surface-to-air missiles, a closed-in weapons system and three anti-submarine rocket launchers. China’s defense spending rose 12 percent in 2014, and it’s no secret that the PLAN is seeking a blue-water naval fleet that includes four aircraft carriers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. China is a great power and a major regional power within Asia, and has been characterized as a potential superpower.[19][20] China emerged as one of the world's earliest civilizations in the fertile basin of the Yellow River in the North China Plain. For millennia, China's political system was based on hereditary monarchies, or dynasties, beginning with the semi-legendary Xia dynasty. Since then, China has then expanded, fractured, and re-unified numerous times. In 1912, the Republic of China (ROC) replaced the last dynasty and ruled the Chinese mainland until 1949, when it was defeated by the communist People's Liberation Army in the Chinese Civil War. The Communist Party established the People's Republic of China in Beijing on 1 October 1949, while the ROC government retreated to Taiwan with its present de facto temporary capital in Taipei. Both the ROC and PRC continue to claim to be the legitimate government of all China, though the latter has more recognition in the world and controls more territory. Since the introduction of economic reforms in 1978, China has become one of the world's fastest-growing major economies. As of 2016, it is the world's second-largest economy by nominal GDP and largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). China is also the world's largest exporter and second-largest importer of goods.[21] China is a recognized nuclear weapons state and has the world's largest standing army and second-largest defense budget.[22][23] The PRC is a member of the United Nations, as it replaced the ROC as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council in 1971. China is also a member of numerous formal and informal multilateral organizations, including the WTO, APEC, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the BCIM and the G-20. The English name "China" is first attested in Richard Eden's 1555 translation[j] of the 1516 journal of the Portuguese explorer Duarte Barbosa.[k][29] The demonym, that is, the name for the people, and adjectival form "Chinese" developed later on the model of Portuguese chinês and French chinois.[30][l] Portuguese China is thought to derive from Persian Chīn (چین), and perhaps ultimately from Sanskrit Cīna (चीन).[32] Cīna was first used in early Hindu scripture, including the Mahābhārata (5th century bce) and the Laws of Manu (2nd century bce).[33] The traditional theory, proposed in the 17th century by Martino Martini[34] and supported by many later scholars, is that the word "China" and its earlier related forms are ultimately derived from the state of Qin (秦, Old Chinese: *Dzin),[35] the westernmost of the Chinese states during the Zhou dynasty which unified China to form the Qin dynasty.[36] There are, however, other suggestions for the derivation of "China".[33] The official name of the modern state is the "People's Republic of China" (Chinese: 中华人民共和国; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó). The shorter form is "China" Zhōngguó (中国), from zhōng ("central" or "middle") and guó ("state, nation-state"),[24][m] a term which developed under the Zhou Dynasty in reference to its royal demesne.
